Abstract

Rankings are part of the higher education system since they act on the expectations of users and the response of institutions. Their influence may even modify or interfere in the prevailing model of university in a society. Besides the public or private condition of the issuing agents, what is determinant is that they should be based on criteria and methodologies acknowledged by the respective academic communities, they should be independent and impartial, and they should use a plurality of criteria and quantifiable data. Prestige or reputation may result in unreliable describers of quality or excellence if they are not integrated with a number of other evaluation criteria.
