Abstract

Problems related to the quality of initial training lead us to propose that the Chilean government should also assume a larger responsibility in ensuring the quality of new teachers that enter the school system. Addressed to universities, managers of partly government funded schools and teachers themselves, the paper suggests designing and implementing a joint qualification and accreditation policy that brings together teacher evaluation and professional development. It further proposes specific adjustments in the process of accreditation and in the design of induction programs for new teachers.
